Machu Picchu Mountain (1A) vs Huayna Picchu (3A)
These are the two most famous “mountain add-on” experiences tied to Machu Picchu tickets.
They are not interchangeable. They differ in:
- route structure,
- allowed time,
- timing strictness,
- and who will enjoy them.
The official way to compare them
Use the official route PDFs. They show the route outline and list an official maximum visit time.
- Route 1-A is “Montana Machupicchu”.
- Route 3-A is “Montana Waynapicchu”.
Pick Machu Picchu Mountain (1A) if…
- You want a longer, bigger-hike feel.
- You want a strong backup when Huayna Picchu sells out.
- You prefer a “big climb” vibe over the narrower-trail reputation of Huayna Picchu.
Pick Huayna Picchu (3A) if…
- It is your dream hike and you are willing to book immediately when available.
- You can align transport logistics to strict timing.
- You are comfortable with steep, narrow trail sections.
Sold-out strategy
If Huayna Picchu is sold out, do not wait around hoping it will appear during your checkout session.
Use a fast ladder:
- Try 1A (Machu Picchu Mountain).
- If that is also sold out, lock in a classic Circuit 2 route.
Timing warning
The official visiting-hours document notes tolerance rules and highlights that mountain routes can be stricter about late entry. Build your train/bus plan around your assigned slot.
